What to Know Before Your First HYROX or Fitness Competition
Taking the next step in your fitness journey can be a pretty daunting task. You may want to know where to start or what to pick in terms of the type of competition you want to join. Here at Primitiv x Swole AF, we are a certified HYROX gym which means that we know all of the ups and downs of exactly how to get ready for a race. Because HYROX’s primary obstacle is endurance, there a lot of training overlap with other fitness programs, but what sets it apart is a unique blend of running and functional movements. Just like training for any other event, HYROX will test your mental and physical stamina, and completing it hinges on what your goals are and how you would like to achieve them.
When it comes to training for a HYROX race, making sure your body is up for the task is arguably the most important thing about committing to this race. HYROX is a 16 station fitness race that combines 8 functional fitness stations sandwiched in between 8 1 km runs to create a fitness challenge not for the faint of heart. Training for this will involve building up your body’s athletic threshold to be able to withstand the stress it puts on you. In a training program, there needs to be a healthy mix of strength and endurance-based activities to create a well rounded program that properly prepares you for your competition. Being able to run while already fatigued from the exercise stations, knowing correct form for wall balls and the sled push or even having enough grip strength for the farmer’s carry are all vital skills that need to be individually trained in advance.
Beyond the physical training, proper nutrition for the race ties heavily into a training program because of how nutrition affects energy levels. Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining energy levels throughout both training and race day. The race primarily focusing on endurance against different obstacles tells us that our bodies need to have prolonged energy to sustain that high level of exertion. This means loading up on carbs and staying hydrated will be two of the most important nutrition factors to adhere to. Our trainers have the ability to assist in the creation of a full nutrition plan that will cover the details of your needs as well as incorporate your personal preference. Making sure you are fueled properly ensures
For beginners, you may look at this and not have any clue where to start, but that is more than okay because we can guide you the entire way through. Our trainers are briefed in all things HYROX, meaning that they know exactly what to do to prepare our members for their respective races in a way that is more than just physical. Before going into HYROX, there is more than just the physical training that can make or break your experience. There is also the mental side of a fitness event and training your brain is just as important as training your body. Everyone there will have different pacing strategies so it is important to focus on what your program has trained you to do. A big first timer mistake is starting off too fast and blowing all of your energy before you get to a point where you'll really need it. Use the first few minutes to settle into your rhythm and shake off those early jitters. In this competition, the only person you are racing against is yourself. If you remember that then race day will feel like a victory lap for all of your hard work instead of a day you dread due to improper preparation.
At the end of the day, your first HYROX or fitness competition is about pushing your limits and discovering what you’re capable of. Whether your goal is to finish, beat a personal record, or simply challenge yourself in a new way, every moment of preparation counts. The training, nutrition, and mindset you build along the way will not only carry you through race day but also strengthen your confidence far beyond the competition floor. So, trust your training, pace yourself wisely, and remember that every rep, every step and every drop of sweat brings you one stride closer to crossing that finish line.
