Mental Reps Matter: Training the Inner Voice
Being active, along with how we think about physical activity in general, is something that has the ability to make or break our mentality. No matter what anyone’s goal is in the gym, one of the most important things is being able to manage internal dialogue. What we think of ourselves and where we find our discipline can be the most important part of how we test ourselves. The only person we live with forever is ourselves, so it's crucial we learn how to offer support and motivation when dealing with difficult mental or physical tasks.
We call this “training your inner voice.” Showing up is important, but your mindset about the experience shapes what you get out of it. Think of it this way: mentality first, and everything else follows. If you believe you can do the hard thing, you will. It may sound like a cliché, but holding yourself accountable really is the hardest part.
Our founder and head trainer, Adan Martinez, touches on this in Episode 4 of the Primitive Podcast. He talks about how building a routine in a secure environment creates momentum and accountability. He reminds us that the most talented people are not always the most motivated. Discipline doesn't come from talent. It comes from showing up, even when you don’t feel like it, and staying consistent.
Training your mindset will set you up for success because it allows you to grow at your own pace. The journey gets easier the more you do it. The more you believe in your ability to get better, the more that belief becomes reality.
But strengthening mental reps doesn’t need to be something you do alone. That’s where our coaches come in. We’re here to help you build a system that works for you, one that makes consistency feel possible. Whether you're starting from zero or trying to push through a plateau, we can help you create habits you actually want to stick with.
In that same podcast episode, Adan talks about how mindset changes how we see obstacles. He says progress is about doing what you can with what you have, not waiting for the perfect time. The all-or-nothing mindset creates excuses. The give-what-you-can mindset builds momentum. Once you stop tolerating less from yourself, discipline starts to take the place of doubt. And eventually, fitness becomes second nature.
If a half marathon or a HYROX race feels impossible right now, start with a smaller goal. Run one mile. Work out twice a week. When that gets easier, raise the bar. You’ll be surprised how quickly the impossible becomes your new normal.
The same goes for eating habits. Instead of overhauling your entire diet overnight, try prepping lunch three days this week. Start small, then build from there. Progress doesn’t happen all at once. It’s built in the little decisions you make every day.
Adan asks, “If your health isn’t one of the most important things in your life, ask yourself why?” That question might be your starting point. Because your internal voice is powerful. It can push you forward or hold you back. As much as you can be your biggest cheerleader, you can also be your toughest critic.
So start by repeating what you want to believe:
You are capable. You are improving. You can do hard things.
Then, find a space that makes those thoughts easier to hold onto.
Your support system doesn’t have to be huge. It can be one coach, a couple of friends, or a class that meets you where you are. The people around you can make the difference between quitting early or staying committed. The consistency you build here will spill into other areas of your life.
It might take time. But you’ll look back and be proud you started. You’ll be grateful you didn’t wait for the perfect moment to begin. And we’ll be right here to meet you at any step along the way.
Let’s figure out your reason. Let’s build the momentum. Let’s train the voice that tells you to keep going.
