Summer's Not an Excuse – It's an Opportunity
Welcome to our Primitive x Swole AF blog! We decided to do this because we realized we have so much valuable information to share with our Primitive Family. This is your community and our goal is that everyone who comes through here can take what they need to feel supported and part of a real fitness family. We are here to educate each other and hold one another accountable because we want you to surpass all of your goals and feel great while doing it.

Every year, by the time summer comes around, we find ourselves in a mad dash to get our “summer bodies” ready. Some people find that when summer arrives and they aren't where they want to be physically, it’s just easier to try again some other time. We want to reframe this mindset and look at this season as an opportunity to rethink what a summer body actually is and take that with us year-round.
We totally get it, life happens and it can be unpredictable. This is especially true during the summer because people have vacations, kids home from school and time with family members that need to fit into an already packed schedule. All of these different things deserve time and attention which means taking care of our bodies can move to the wayside. We fall out of our routines and become complacent; forgetting that an able body is what allows us to keep up with these crazy schedules.
Here at Primitive Movement x Swole AF, we want our family to feel like they have the tools and information to make choices that benefit their health without compromising their off time. This means doing what we can with what we have and adapting in order to keep our bodies feeling able to handle life. Even prioritizing the seemingly “little” things like hydration and recovery makes all of the difference in turning a stagnant summer into a progress window.
Staying hydrated in the summer heat is one of the most important things we can do to keep our bodies feeling good. On average, people need to consume about 90 - 120 ounces of water throughout the day. Factors like body weight, activity level and climate obviously have a huge effect on this number, but the most important thing is to listen to your body signals and focus on your individual needs. Drink a cup of water right when you wake up in the morning and set goals for water consumption throughout the day to get ahead of the game. Often by the time our body is telling us “I’m thirsty” we’ve already gotten behind and may start to experience a bit of dry mouth, headaches or even dizziness depending on the weather. This chain reaction has the ability to affect energy levels and ruin your day before it has even started which is why paying attention to how much water you drink is so important all of the time, but especially during the summer.
Arguably, just as important as hydration is rest and recovery. Travelling and constantly being around others takes a toll on the mind and body especially if what you’re doing is something you aren’t used to. Prioritizing rest after a family trip or vacation can do wonders in restoring your body’s energy levels and helping you keep that summer glow and energy necessary for a great season. Now, you might be thinking “ aren’t rest and recovery the same thing?” and the answer is that they are more like cousins. Rest refers to a period of inactivity while recovery is moving your body in ways that actively promote the healing process. The two things can take an abundance of different shapes depending on the person considering their needs and schedule. Examples of rest and recovery could be as simple as going to bed an hour or two early at night to taking post lunch and dinner walks to get those daily steps in. Maybe instead of an intense workout that you may not have time for, you can focus on mobility instead. This may consist of stretching nightly on vacation and being mindful of the ways you move your body. Many people forget that mobility is part of a strong foundation and deserves just as much attention as lifting heavy or building endurance.
There are many different ways to keep up with the needs of our bodies as long as we make the time to sit and listen to what it tells us. Progress doesn’t need to be perfect and only dedicating 10% of your time will help you more in the long run than giving up altogether. We love our Primitive Family and we want you to take on life with confidence in your mind and body always. It's all about finding the little things that make you feel good and ready to take on these long, hot summer days and we are more than willing to be there for you every step of the way.
