2026/27 Season Rule Changes - What's New This Year

Last updated: September 2026. Verified against the official HYROX Season 26/27 rulebooks.

HYROX dropped some big rulebook changes ahead of the 2026/27 season. Some of these changes are very good for the race but also very important to pay attention to as some may disqualify you from the race.

What changed for 2026/27

  • Any incomplete station is now an automatic DQ, across all eight stations.

  • Dropping the sandbag is a 15 second penalty, not a DQ.

  • Doubles partners must stay within a 10 second gap.

  • Only event supplied chalk, only at sled pull and farmers carry.

  • Lingering in the start tunnel after your wave costs up to 1 minute.

  • Clarified and now explicitly legal: SkiErg jumping, 5cm foot stagger on burpee broad jumps, overtaking at three stations.

  • Clarified and now explicitly required: facing the direction of travel on the sled push.

  • No partner substitutions at the World Championships, including for injury.

Coach Daniel Baek of Primitive x SwoleAF Gym states, "these are good changes for the Hyrox, the old sandbag drop as a disqualification was a bit much, glad the rules are moving in the right direction."

The Big One: An Incomplete Station Is Now a DQ

This is the biggest change this season.

For 2026/27, failure to complete a station in full is a disqualification, and it applies across all eight stations. That covers leaving the SkiErg or rower before 1,000 meters, stopping short of 100 wall balls, skipping a sled lane, and missing a farmers carry lap. Each of those is now its own DQ code in the rulebook.

Run laps work differently, and this is where people get confused. Missing a run lap is still a time penalty: 3 minutes at a 4 lap venue, 5 minutes at 3 laps, 7 minutes at 2 laps. Only a single lap venue turns it into a DQ. So a missed run lap hurts your time. A missed sled lane ends your day.

Sandbag Lunges - Drop Is No Longer an Automatic DQ

This one's a genuine relief, especially for athletes racing in the Open division.

The old rule was brutal: if the sandbag came off your shoulders a second time, you were disqualified. The 2026/27 rulebook changes it to a 15-second time penalty per occurrence, with no automatic DQ trigger on a second drop.

The bag still has to be fully supported by you at all times. Resting it on the ground, against a barricade, or on your feet still counts as an infraction. But the difference between a 15-second penalty you can recover from and a race-ending DQ at station 7 is massive. Train clean form, but know the floor of the penalty is much lower now.

Chalk: Event Chalk Only, and It Stays Put

The chalk rule got tighter and more specific. Chalk is permitted at the sled pull and farmers carry only, and it has to be the chalk the event provides. Using chalk anywhere else on the course is a 2 minute penalty. So is bringing your own. So is carrying event chalk away from a station to use later.

If chalking up before wall balls or the sled push has been part of your routine, that routine now costs you two minutes.

Start Tunnel: Move When Your Wave Moves

New for this season: a penalty of up to 1 minute for athletes who are still standing in the start tunnel after their wave has gone.

Being late to your own start used to be its own punishment. Now it comes with time added to your result. Be at the tunnel early, be ready when your wave is called, and move when it moves.

Sled Push - You Must Face Forward the Entire Time

New explicit rule: throughout the full sled push distance, you must face the direction you're pushing. Turning around, walking beside the sled, or pulling it backward at any point is now a penalized violation.

This was a gray area in previous seasons. Some athletes would rotate or change body position toward the end of the push when fatigue hit. Under the 2026/27 rulebook, that's no longer tolerated.

SkiErg - Jumping Technique Is Now Officially Legal

Though an unorthodox technique, If you use a jumping pull technique on the SkiErg, you're now fully within the rules. The 2026/27 rulebook explicitly permits your feet to briefly leave the base plate during the pull-down motion.

The one hard line that remains: your feet cannot touch the floor at any point before your 1,000 meters is confirmed complete. Feet off the plate during the pull is fine. Feet on the floor is a penalty.

Rowing - Stay Seated Until the Judge Confirms

The completion standard at the rowing station is now explicit and strictly enforced. You must remain seated in the rowing machine until a judge verbally confirms your 1,000 meters is done. Standing up, leaving the seat, or dismounting even a half-second early is a penalty.

You're still allowed to pause mid-row, release the handle, or take your feet off the footplates - as long as you stay seated. The instinct to hop off the rower the instant your monitor hits 1,000 meters is exactly the kind of split-second mistake that picks up a penalty in the heat of the race. Finish your last pull, check your distance, and wait for the judge's call before you move.

Burpee Broad Jumps - 5cm Foot Stagger Allowed

Feet still need to take off and land together on every broad jump. But the 2026/27 rulebook now clarifies that up to 5 centimeters of stagger between your toe tips is acceptable. Natural jump rhythm and roughly level feet are both within standard.

What still gets penalized: a full split stance, one foot clearly ahead of the other, or extra shuffle steps before takeoff. If you've been flagged for minor foot positioning in past races, this update works in your favor.

Doubles - The 10 Second Togetherness Standard

Doubles teams now operate under a tighter proximity rule. The maximum permitted gap between partners is 10 seconds - shorter than the previous season's buffer. You still can't begin any workout station until both athletes are present.

If your Doubles race plan involves one partner running well ahead to "scout" the next station, that window has narrowed significantly. Recalibrate your pacing strategy so both partners stay within range.

Hygiene - 2-Minute Penalty, No Warnings

Spitting or clearing your nose onto the floor or carpet during the race is a 2-minute time penalty per infringement. In severe cases, it can result in a DQ at the Race Director's discretion.

Two minutes is a huge chunk of time at any level. Carry a small towel or tissue in your race kit from the start. Build the habit in training so it's automatic on race day. This is one of the easiest penalties in HYROX to avoid entirely.

Coach Nathan Gaza of Primitive x SwoleAF gym states, "you wouldn't think the hygiene penalty was needed, but with people blowing out snot and spit on the floor, it was needed."

Clarifications That Settle Old Arguments

These were gray areas that judges enforced inconsistently. The 2026/27 rulebook puts them in writing.

SkiErg jumping is legal

If you use a jumping pull on the SkiErg, you are within the rules. Your feet may leave the base plate during the pull, as long as they return to it. The hard line is the floor: your feet cannot touch the ground before your 1,000 meters is confirmed complete.

Burpee broad jumps allow 5cm of stagger

Feet still take off and land together, but a variance of up to 5 centimeters between them is now explicitly permitted. A full split stance, one foot clearly ahead, or extra shuffle steps before takeoff still draw 15 seconds. If you have been flagged for minor foot position before, this one is in your favor.

Sled push requires facing the direction of travel

You have to face where you are pushing for the whole 50 meters. Turning around, walking beside the sled, or dragging it backward when the legs give out is now explicitly a violation. This one used to depend on the judge you drew.

Overtaking is permitted at three stations

You can pass a slower athlete at sandbag lunges, burpee broad jumps, and farmers carry. Lane and grid lines at those stations are guidance, not hard boundaries. No more wondering whether stepping around someone is going to cost you.

The final lunge counts when your lead foot lands

A small one that matters at the line: the last sandbag lunge is complete when your leading foot contacts the ground beyond the finish line of the station.

FAQ

Does dropping the sandbag still get you disqualified in HYROX?

No. As of the 2026/27 season, dropping the sandbag during lunges carries a 15-second penalty per occurrence. The old rule that triggered an automatic DQ on the second drop has been removed. The bag must still be fully supported at all times.

What happens if you don't finish a station in HYROX?

Automatic disqualification. The 2026/27 rulebook requires every one of the 8 stations to be completed to full standard. Skipping, shortening, or abandoning any station ends your race - no valid finishing time.

Can you get penalized for leaving the rowing machine early?

Yes. You must stay seated in the rower until a judge verbally confirms your 1,000 meters is complete. Standing up or dismounting before confirmation results in a penalty.

Is jumping technique on the SkiErg legal in HYROX?

Yes. The 2026/27 rulebook officially permits a dynamic jumping technique where your feet briefly leave the base plate. The only restriction is that your feet cannot touch the floor before your 1,000 meters is confirmed done.

What's the penalty for spitting during a HYROX race?

A 2-minute time penalty per infringement, with the possibility of disqualification at the Race Director's discretion. Carry a towel or tissue in your kit.

How close do Doubles partners need to stay in HYROX?

The maximum permitted gap between Doubles partners is now 10 seconds under the 2026/27 rules. Exceeding this carries a 1-minute penalty per run or station, up to 3 times - after that, you're out of competition.

Can you pass other athletes during HYROX stations?

Yes, at three stations: Sandbag Lunges, Burpee Broad Jumps, and Farmers Carry. Overtaking is now officially permitted at these stations under the 2026/27 rulebook. Lane lines serve as guidance only.
